Minor Field Trip and Seminars

August 25, 2012

Davao City

Field Trip Overview:

The most awaiting part of the curriculum of the Bachelor of Science in Information Technology students is the Field Trip and Seminars.

On this year, our Minor field trip was chosen to be here in Davao. The group decided to visit the first and best public command center here in the Philippines and it is located on our very own city. It was the Public Safety and Security Command Center (PSSCC). The purpose of our visit was to gain knowledge and ideas on how our command centers work especially in live and critical operations.

This visit is a wonderful experience because we witness how our city evolves from slow response team to fast and secured team.

Day of Minor Field Trip – PSSCC(Public Safety and Security Command Center)

Today, I went to company visit to…

I went to PSSCC(Public Safety and Security Command Center) located at Sandawa, Matina Davao City.

What I Learned?

I learned that their facilities used in monitoring the traffic was one of the most advanced technologies in the world. And also Davao is the only city that has Emergency 911 in the Philippines. The cost of this facilities and buildings ranges up to 700 million pesos. Furthermore, the system used by the PSSCC was made by the IBM called IOC (Intelligence Operations Center) this system was to improve the monitoring of the traffic and operations in real-time. Davao is the first city that developed in to smarter city in which its security and safety is high. This facility was developed in order for the city to be the model in safety and peace in the country.

One of the best technologies used in this development was the CCTV’s. It is because it has the capability to 35x zoom that the video catch in real-time. The building of the PSSCC is secured. It has a biometric access door that only the staff and people that are working in the PSSCC can access it. Furthermore their monitors are all brand new with an HD output.

PSSCC is compose of Government agencies like the DCPO(Davao City Police Officer) that handles the traffic and other security, the CHO (City Health Office) and the central 911 which rescue all kinds of problem such as, fire prevention and health care. The PSSCC is also equipped with a weather monitoring and flood alert system.

What I Liked?

I really like their high-end facilities and the biometric doors.

What I didn’t like?

I don’t have negative comments.

Recommendation

I highly recommend for the incoming Minor Field Trip and Seminars. The PSSCC (Public Safety and Security Command Center) of Davao, not just because it’s in our own city but it also has the knowledge, structure and idea that the Information Technology student must know. In addition , I hope for the next Minor Field Trip to visit more interesting and best Information Communication Technology companies here in Davao or Mindanao.

TRAVEL REPORT

Major Field Trip and Seminars

September 10 – 14, 2012

Manila

Field Trip Overview:

The most awaiting part of the curriculum of the Bachelor of Science in Information Technology students is the Field Trip and Seminars.

On this year our major field trip destination was outside Davao City. It is decided to be in National Capital Region. The fieldtrip was composed of 5 days and 4 nights. The trip was started on September 10 and ended on September 14, 2012. Our Itinerary for 5 days was to visit best companies in the region. On the first day visit was in the DOST Bicutan and in the MMDA. On our second day was in the University of Philippines attending the convention of Y4IT whole day. On our third day was in the popular telephone company the PLDT in Mandaluyong and in the afternoon was the SSS office in Quezon City. On our fourth day in the morning we have sightseeing in Tagaytay and in the afternoon was in the Laguna Electronics and for the last day of the field trip was in the J.P. Morgan Chase.

The whole trip was wonderful because it is my first time to ride an airplane and the trip was really full of new experience.

DAY 1 A.M. – DOST, Bicutan (Science Technology Information Institute)

Today, I went to company visit to…

Upon arrival at the Manila Airport we went directly to our first visit in DOST.

Upon entering the gate I observed that their area is full of trees, which made the place small upon viewing outside. But I was amazed when I saw how big the place was the time when we enter the area. While waiting in our setting destination at the lecture area, Kuya Carlo, our tour guide told us some icebreakers and trivia about the place which gave us more information and knowledge.

When the bus stop, we immediately walked and went to the lecture room. When we reached the audio-visual room, lecture had already started.

What I Learned?

During the lecture, I learned about some technologies that are used now-a-days like the IPV6 which used for creating more combinations of IP’s. But the best topic I learned was about their project, the Project NOAH (Nationwide Operational Assessment of Hazards). It is a project made by the partnership of UP and DOST, they made this project because of the recent calamity that hits in our country like flood. It’s a map of the country that views every place with their specific weather. The best feature of this project was it can search specific place in the country and calculates what will be the weather of the day.

What I Liked?

What I liked in the DOST besides the cool audio-visual room, is the lecture of their project, the main vision was to help the people of our country with no cost. So far I really liked their PROJECT NOAH.

What I didn’t like?

What I didn’t like in the DOST visitation was their internet connection it messes up during the speakers talk.

DAY 1 P.M.– Traffic Engineering (MMDA), EDSA, Makati

Today, I went to company visit to…

After we take our lunch in the Aberdeen Court which made my tummy full, we directly went to our second visit of the day in the MMDA (Metropolitan Manila Development Authority).

When we arrived at MMDA we directly went to their view room. That’s when the lecture starts.

What I Learned?

When we are inside the view room of MMDA the most common item that will be found was the monitors, because it shows the traffic all over the place with the use of CCTV’s and WIMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access). I’m amazed that there are so many CCTV’s they’ve used for monitoring the flow of the traffic in NCR.

Aside from that, they also monitor the flow of drainage system. They created a system which can view levels of water in different drainage. I was amazed of the vacuum/suction pump system because of its purpose that if it detects high water level, it automatically vacuums the water and throw it to the nearest body of water.

What I Liked?

What I liked in the visitation in the MMDA was the chance of entering the command center which you can actually see the live action of the call center and the control of CCTV’s.

What I didn’t like?

The only thing that I didn’t like in the MMDA was their place. It was so crowded. It was full of trucks, bus and vehicles. And it doesn’t have designated area for parking lot.

DAY 2 A.M and P.M – Y4IT Seminar

Today, I went to company visit to…

We have rested at Kabayan Hotel in Pasay City. On the second day of our Major Field Trip in Manila, we went to attend the 10th Philippine Youth Congress on Information Technology in University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City.

We arrived in UP Diliman at around 8:00 in the morning. Before we enter the University Theater, we took first some side trips around the oblation monument of UP. We took some pictures and amazingly enjoyed and had fun.

When we arrived in the University Theater we’ve been dispatch to another venue in the Ang Bahay ng Alumni because of the reason that University Theater was crowded. Our very best facilitator Mr. Randy Gamboa was one of the speakers in the Ang Bahay ng Alumni. So to give our best support, we went there. We are very much proud when we heard our facilitator speak in front. After our facilitator’s speech it was preceded by the different professionals in IT Industry which made some quietly boring.

We had expected that this will be fun.

What I Learned?

What I learned in the convention was there were so many paths in the I.T Industry that you can take. One of this was in developing software, multimedia and arts and many more.

In the afternoon we decided to change location, we choose the University Theater because they said it was good in there. The afternoon session starts with the talk about SPREAD by Sudral, Samantha Jade. Her topic was all about a game for the speech appreciation of the hearing impaired person, I was amazed in her development. The next speaker was Alvin Chan a game designer his talk was about the feedback loop. He said that it was really important in game developing to have feedback to acquire a good output. And the last speaker before the break was Joseph Desmond Cruel his talk was all about the evolution of the technology in film making from the film strips to the latest that it uses a HD to save the filmed movie. He was a post-production consultant of the ABS-CBN.

What I Liked?

I liked it in UP Theater because every after the talk they will do some dance, singing games and it was fun. Also, I liked the booth which sells bar pins with the design of the Y4IT. So I bought five bar pins. I really enjoyed the convention not just because of the good speakers but also of the free snacks. I love the last part when we went to a mini market which sells souvenirs. I did had fun in buying souvenirs.

What I didn’t like?

The only thing that I didn’t like in the convention was the speakers. Even though it was full of knowledge, I found some of it was boring, I think they must choose next time an interesting and energetic speaker.

DAY 3 A.M – PLDT, Mandaluyong City

Today, I went to company visit to…

This is the third day of our FTS. On this day, our next company visit was in the PLDT (Philippine Long Distance Telephone) Company located at Mandaluyong City.

Before our arrival at PLDT, we passed on the street of España.I was amazed because the street became a sea street due to flood from a small rain the other night. We also had our side trip at Pinoy Big Brother House of ABS-CBN.

Upon arrival at PLDT, we wait almost one hour because we are too early. We stayed at the bus and does some stuff like singing with my friends while waiting for the PLDT to give us signal that we can enter to their company.

PLDT was one of the strict companies we had entered because of their rule not to bring camera inside of the building for confidentiality.

What I Learned?

What I learned in PLDT was their services in the country that reached 84 years providing communication using telephone. They were developing years of evolution of telephone from landline to wireless phones. The PLDT was a also an internet provider.

The hallway was also amazing because of the timeline booth which tells the history of the company, its transformation and events.

After the visual room, we went to the upper part of the building and learn a lot about the Acer Company. They are the number one top selling brand in the Philippines.

After that, we split into two groups, my group went to the new home technology of PLDT. It has a personal computer which controls the devices in your house from air conditioner to lamp. It uses a PLDT device that controls the flow and the internet speed of the new home technology. It was up to 1gb because it uses a fiber optic wire that helps lessen the traffic of bandwidth.

We also view the new office technology of PLDT that uses a live broadcasting of the place using cameras in different PLDT Branch.

What I Liked?

I like the discussion of the timeline of PLDT, it’s fun to know how it evolves from telephone to watchpad.

What I didn’t like?

I didn’t like their rule that no one can bring cameras inside the building.

DAY 3 P.M – Social Security System, East Ave., Quezon City

Today, I went to company visit to…

After visiting the PLDT and eating lunch in the bus. The next stop is in SSS (Social Security System).

What I Learned?
During the discussion in SSS (Social Security System), I knew that their vision was to enhance the financial visibility, improve collections ,enhance benefits and improve the delivery of service in people. I also understand that SSS is protecting the society from social distress. The SSS started the technology in computer since 1970 and they used the batch processing.

What I Liked?

What I liked in SSS is the place of its office it was clean and organized, especially in the area which the people pays their contribution it was a step by step process, you don’t need to worry if it’s your first time.

What I didn’t like?

The speaker is not knowledgeable on their system.

DAY 4 P.M – Laguna Electronics, Canlubang, Calamba City

Today, I went to company visit to…

After having sightseeing in Tagaytay Peoples Park, The Big Bus group directly went to the Laguna Electronics (TSUKIDEN) in Laguna.

Like the other companies we had visited, this company was also very strict. Cameras are prohibited inside. And also you must remove your shoes and wear slippers provided.

What I Learned?

What I learned was that the company builds different motherboards in different gadgets and devices from cell phones to projectors. I’m amazed because the technology they had used was so high-tech. They have a machine that puts the small parts of the board in just millisecond. Also I learned that in their industry they wanted to employ ladies, it is because ladies are meticulous and much more patient than man. Their company wants a high quality products.

What I Liked?

I liked the way the speaker discusses. Also I liked their sanitized and high-tech company.

What I didn’t like?

I didn’t like the discussion about their company activities and events.

DAY 5 A.M – J.P. Morgan Chase, Bonifacio Global, Taguig

Today, I went to company visit to…

It’s the 5th day and last day of the fieldtrip and the last company visit was the best, it’s the J.P. Morgan Chase located at the Bonifacio Global City in Taguig.

It’s the last day and I got sore throat.

Upon arrival at the place, we didn’t get inside directly because they needed to confirm our transaction.

Upon entering in the company you will pass in x-ray whole body scanner. When you’re inside the staff will ask your name to give us name tags.

What I Learned?
I learned that J.P Morgan Chase was the number one in the Global Financial service. One of the reasons are their employees. Before the lecture starts we toured in the company. Their company was so big that I’m amazed of their facilities. The elevators and the rooms are secured that only staffs can enter because of the ID scanner. First room that the tour guide showed us was the clinic. The company has its own clinic for their employees. They also have reflection room, war room and many more facilities for their employees.

I learned that JP Morgan Chase company needs employees that are not only good in mentally aspects but also contain good attitudes.

What I Liked?

I really liked the way they treat their employees, you can determine it because they put value, care and satisfaction in which helps the employee to become more loyal.

I really liked their free drinks vending machine.

What I didn’t like?

I didn’t like the company’s confidentiality.

Recommendation

I really recommend for the next batch of Field Trip and Seminars is to really attend in the Y4IT convention because many new knowledge and ideas will be feed in the minds of the IT student. Also a piece of advice from the officers in the next batch of FTS, try to conduct a research what kind of company you will choose in order for your IT minds to be satisfied. The company that catches my attention was the PLDT so I recommend it, because in that company you will know how their past technologies evolve. And don’t forget to have side trips for you to enjoy and to complete your trip, I recommend the Enchanted Kingdom ride all you can. Also the Tagaytay and Tutuban for your souvenirs.
